The field of Cardiothoracic Surgery is undergoing an evolution with the development of novel surgical therapies, minimally invasive approaches to existing operations, and the field of catheter based therapy. The Thoracic Surgery Residents Association (TSRA) has recognized the need for fellows to be exposed to and to train in new technologies and minimally invasive techniques. The TSRA, with the support and collaboration of the Thoracic Surgery Directors Association and the CTSnet.org Residents Section, has developed the Cardiothoracic Technology Symposium to expose fellows to new technologies and techniques in cardiothoracic surgery. The Cardiothoracic Technology Symposium is designed exclusively for thoracic surgery residents in ACGME accredited programs and is held at the University of Cincinnati Center for Surgical Innovation.
The Cardiothoracic Technology Symposium consists of didactic sessions, unique hands-on cadaver and animal laboratory experiences, a porcine cardiac wet lab, and endovascular simulation. Didactic components feature practical information from speakers who are acknowledged experts in their respective fields. The opportunity to actually perform different techniques and use new technologies in the animal and cadaver lab, under the tutelage of faculty experts, separates the Cardiothoracic Technology Symposium from other cardiothoracic fellow courses.
